Cell Phones for Everyone

Almost everyone has cell phones even in Nongoma. So to be a team player, I purchased a lovely Motorola Cell phone for $65 with a pay-as-you-go plan, which is the primary plan for most people. All plans provide free incoming calls and text messaging, but outgoing calls can be expensive. 2 minutes on the cell phone long distance cost nearly $3. Besides, it feels good to be connected to the world again. So give me a call. However I was just told that you need to dial first 011 to dial out of the US, then 27 (SA country code), then 76 (area code --not 076) and finally my cell phone number as provided in my email. So it's 011-27-96-xxx-xxxx.

Otherwise phone calls from landlines with the World Call or USA Call Phone Cards offer the cheapest way to call even nationally and definitely internationally. Because many people don’t have landlines; there’s a sparse number of public phones; and it’s expensive to make long cell phone calls with a pay-as-you-go plan, phone vendors line the streets waiting for your business. (The previous statement might be full of stale air, but I have no real explanation why people sell minutes to use their personal phone on the street rather then use the public phone or their own cell phone. Ooh well). That’s right! People sit next to their phones in public waiting for you to make a phone call for a fee - Very strange.
