ARV Numbers

Below are the Saint Benedictine HIV stats for 2004. Remember patients started officially on April 2004 and so this is compilation of a short year. It shows three different groups.

Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) Stats
This group is the patients that have a suspected HIV infection either by a physician or by themselves. Some are then counseled and then most of them are tested. I think it’s important to note the rather high numbers of self referrals.

Self Referred 1480
Medically Referred 2341
Pretest Counseled 3199
Total Tested 3064
Total Not Tested 145
Total Tested Positive 2235
Total Tested Negative 807
Total Discordant 12
Posttest Counseled 3064
Ongoing Counseling 408

Preventing Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) Stats
Pregnant females with suspecting HIV symptoms are sent for counseling immediately. In this case numbers show that many soon to be mothers do not want to get tested.

Pretest Counseled 1976

Total Tested 774
Total Tested Positive 291
Total Tested Negative 453
Total Not Tested 540

ARV Clinic Stats
The most astounding number is that 63% of individuals on the first CD4 screening register below a 200 cell count. That means most individuals come into the hospital at a late stage presentation of HIV or full blown AIDS.
